What is an eating disorder?
We believe eating disorders are not just about food. They reflect struggles with control, self-worth, and deeper emotional pain.
At Tresna Psychiatry, we take an integrative and compassionate approach, blending medical insight with psychotherapeutic depth to uncover root causes and support long-term healing.
Our care is trauma-informed and personalized, helping individuals build a healthier relationship with food, body image, and themselves.
When Do Eating Habits Become A Problem?
Eating habits naturally fluctuate, especially during stressful times or life changes. But when thoughts about food, weight, or body shape begin to dominate your day or interfere with health and functioning, it may be a sign of an eating disorder.
Eating disorders affect people of all ages, body sizes, and genders. If eating feels secretive, compulsive, or rigid, or if your physical or emotional health is suffering, it’s time to seek help. Early support leads to better outcomes.
What Are the Types of Eating Disorders?
Anorexia Nervosa
Marked by food restriction, intense fear of weight gain, and a distorted body image. May involve excessive exercise, rituals, or denial about the seriousness of low weight.
Bulimia Nervosa
Involves repeated episodes of binge eating followed by purging behaviors like vomiting, fasting, or over-exercising. Often accompanied by shame and a sense of being out of control.
Binge Eating Disorder (BED)
Characterized by consuming large amounts of food in short periods, often in secret, followed by distress or guilt. BED does not involve purging.
Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
Involves extreme selectivity or restriction in eating, often unrelated to body image. May be linked to sensory issues or fear of choking or vomiting.
Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED)
Refers to disordered eating that causes significant distress but does not meet full criteria for another eating disorder.
How are eating disorders diagnosed?
There is no single test for eating disorders. Diagnosis is based on clinical interviews, a review of eating patterns, emotional health, and physical impact. We assess the severity, duration, and functional impact of behaviors while screening for co-occurring conditions like trauma, anxiety, or depression. Using DSM-5 criteria as a foundation, we focus on understanding your individual experience and designing care that fits your life.
What are the Symptoms of Eating Disorders?

- Excessive exercise, even when tired or unwell
- Gastrointestinal issues without a medical cause
