Addiction & substance abuse disorders
We believe healing from addiction goes beyond stopping a behavior. It’s about uncovering what drives it.
At Tresna Psychiatry, we offer a compassionate and evidence-based approach that treats the whole person, not just the substance use.
Our clinicians blend psychotherapy, trauma-informed care, and supportive medication strategies to help clients reclaim their lives with clarity and confidence.
When Is Substance Abuse A Problem?
If substance use begins to interfere with your health, relationships, work, or emotional well-being, it’s more than casual use. Addiction can manifest gradually, and many people don’t realize they’re struggling until the consequences become unmanageable.
If stopping use feels difficult or if cravings control your actions, it’s time to seek help. Recovery is possible with the right support.
What are common Substance Use Disorders?
Alcohol Use Disorder
Persistent, problematic drinking that causes distress or impairment. May involve tolerance, withdrawal, and continued use despite consequences
Opioid Use Disorder
Misuse of prescription painkillers (like oxycodone) or illicit drugs (like heroin) leading to dependence, withdrawal, and dangerous health effects
Stimulant Use Disorder
Misuse of substances like cocaine or methamphetamines that increase alertness, often resulting in serious physical and mental health complications
Cannabis Use Disorder
Ongoing use of marijuana that leads to functional impairment, dependency, or withdrawal symptoms
Sedative, Hypnotic, or Anxiolytic Use Disorder
Misuse of prescription anti-anxiety or sleep medications (like benzodiazepines) leading to tolerance, dependence, or withdrawal
Stimulant Use Disorder
Misuse of substances like cocaine or methamphetamines that increase alertness, often resulting in serious physical and mental health complications
How is addiction diagnosed?
There are no lab tests that definitively diagnose addiction, but clinicians use structured interviews, behavioral assessments, and clinical criteria from the DSM-5. Diagnosis is based on the pattern, severity, and impact of substance use on a person’s life. A full assessment may also include screening for co-occurring mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, or PTSD.
What are the Symptoms of Addiction?
Symptoms can vary by substance but often include:
- Cravings or strong urges to use
- Withdrawal symptoms when not using
- Loss of interest in activities
- Isolation from friends and family
- Neglecting work, school, or responsibilities
- Failed attempts to quit or cut back
- Increased tolerance to the substance
- Risky behaviors while using
- Using more or longer than intended
- Continued use despite harm
